The Foundation for Individual Liberty is a New Jersey private nongovernmental, nonprofit organization established in 1994 as UM Holdings Foundation. The organization’s mission is to support the principles of individual rights (the rights of each person to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness), limited government, and free markets. The Foundation for Individual Liberty supports organizations and initiatives that advocate a society built on capitalism in which profit and production are seen as virtuous and government serves only to protect the rights of the individual and to defend American freedom against any who would violate those rights.
The Foundation is privately funded through donations from UM Holdings Ltd as well as the families of John Aglialoro and Joan Carter, founders of UM Holdings and the Foundation for Individual Liberty. It supports primarily causes aligned with its mission and, to a lesser extent, groups that benefit the Delaware Valley community. Decisions regarding charitable contributions are made by the Foundation's Board of Trustees.
The Foundation for Individual Liberty was established under the New Jersey Nonprofit Corporation Act and determined to be exempt from federal tax under Section 501(c)(3) and a private foundation under Section 509(a) of the Internal Revenue Code.
